Covid-19, quanti anticorpi?

THE ANTI-BODY TITLE

The amount of anti-Sars-CoV-2 antibodies and the fear of low values encountered is an interesting and very topical topic that in many people acts as a detonator to trigger doubts about vaccination.

To defuse the explosion of doubts, reading the post by Mario Puoti and Lucia Mazzacurati, published on 12.08.2021 on the Fb page “Pillole di Ottimismo“, will be helpful.

The authors, providing elementary notions of immunology, answer some questions, explaining complex mechanisms in a simple and clear way.

The post is true and pure scientific information that while on the one hand reassures the reader, providing him with the “logic” of the value of vaccination, on the other hand it removes him from the pressing and profitable disinformation.

… we want to explain well how vaccines protect us from the disease and know how to do it well against all the variants that have emerged so far and how they can do it for a long time.

Antibodies are proteins, and … for reasons purely referable to human physiology, it is probably not “healthy”, nor “economically” advantageous (for the organism, of course), to have too high antibody titers always and for any reason type of threat.

… the antibody titer that … we read in our samples is not an absolute index or not of protection from the disease against SARS-COV-2, not only because we must remember the other immune component represented by T lymphocytes, …

B cells normally have the ability to remember the right instructions to produce the quantities of antibodies needed for that particular antigen …

a particular process called Somatic Hypermutation … which occurs in the lymph nodes with a frequency up to 1000 times higher than that of any other part of the human genome, leads to the production of antibodies more and more similar to that specific antigen than those previously produced: … Greater affinity … indicates a higher neutralizing power.

Shortly after exposure to an antigen, circulating levels of antibodies tend to increase because the B cell component differentiates into a group of cells called plasma cells that secrete antibodies, … but eventually these cells also die, which leads to a decrease in circulating antibodies.

We are left with the memory B cells. When the antigen is encountered again, these are immediately ready to divide and differentiate into antibody-secreting cells (ASC) to respond quickly, protecting us from the disease effectively and for a long time,

… even if your circulating antibody levels tend to drop, the potency of your antibodies may continue to rise.

The same thing is true for COVID-19, both in patients who have overcome the infection, and with regard to vaccines.

You don’t need to be obsessed with how many these antibodies are …
